Motivational Monday

Teachers:

October is National Bully Prevention month  this video has a great message. (There’s actually several produced under the name “bystander revolution”) We talk to the kids about being bystanders but I think it’s really hard to speak up. Here is a little encouragement. Share with your students if you feel it is appropriate.

Motivational Monday!

Teachers,

Last Friday I attended a memorial service for a young man I had known since he was 3 months old. As I reflect on this sad event and his personality I’m reminded that a lot of our kids have this picture of perfectionism that is not achievable. I would encourage you to be aware and let them know no matter how they do, so long as they are trying, learning and caring about others- what they do matters.

Thanks for all you do!!

Lesley

Goodbye September!

Just like that, September is over in a flash!  In the month of September, we accomplished a great deal!  We wrote context letters about what matters most, we discovered our true colors, we spent time building relationships with students as the school year kicked off, battled ashpocolypse, initiated our Personalized Learning Plans, deployed 815 Chromebooks, chose ILT workgroups, battled I-Ready, and set the tone for our work as a building this year.  Quite a bit in just one month!!!  I appreciate all of the amazing effort that you all put into your work day in and day out.  It truly makes a difference!  Bring on the Fall!

Week in Review

  • On Tuesday, newly appointed Superintendent John Steach was in the building visiting classrooms.  Steach and Co. were particularly impressed with the level of community established between student/teacher throughout the building.  He said it was clear that teachers were taking the time to get to know their students.  Discourse, collaboration, and – of course – technology dotted the landscape as we saw students engaging in a variety of learning opportunities.
  • On Wednesday, staff took to various tech learning opportunities fielded by our Ed-Tech TOSAs as well as our own Mr. Allen.  Many of you learned new skills or refined previous ones.  Thank you for taking the time to grow in your ability to blend technology into the learning environment.

Motivational Monday – Letter to our 1st Year Selves

This motivation stems from the incredibly helpful nature that so many of you have.  We have several new teachers in the building and I have been very impressed by how much you have gone out of your way to support our newest Silverbacks.  This reminds me of the terrific video below.  We all remember what it was like as we entered this wonderful world.

ILT Groups Begin – Wednesday, 10/4

On Wednesday, 10/4, ILT Groups will kickoff in the Media Center.  Please bring your Surface Pro to the meeting, as groups will be completing their Action Plans located in ItsLearning.

~ The Counseling Department

Week in Review

  • Open House: First of all – a big thank you to all staff for your efforts at our 2nd annual Open House.  The parking lot was full and students/families were abuzz as they navigated the campus.  Several students loaded up with freshly minted Frontier gear.  Bringing our families to school helps strengthen the home <–> school partnership, which is critical to our success.  Thank you!
  • PLP Kickoff:  On Wednesday, we kicked off our work around personalized learning plans for 2017-2018.  The long-term target for this work is to become the leader of your own learning as you take time to explore components of your practice in an effort to impact your own instruction, leading to student growth.  It was great to see you all working in various groups.  I am confident that your work this year will lead to some incredible, high-impact growth for both you and your students!
  • Student Support Brochure:  On Wednesday, I also shared a brochure that our Counseling Department created, outlining the options for support regarding student services.  For those interested, you can access that form digitally here.

Technology Training – Wednesday, 9/27

On Wednesday, 9/27, we will be holding tech training.  You were asked to vote and select one of the models below to meet your current tech needs.  Training will begin promptly at 2:45:

  • ItsLearning – I would like support around how to use the planner (uploading documents, using some basic features, communicating information with students)
    • Location: Media Center
  • ItsLearning II – I can do the above, but I would like to know more about how to create assignments/assessment in ItsLearning that can be graded and uploaded into my grade book
    • Location: Media Center
  • Hapara – I keep hearing about this, but I don’t really know what it is or how I can use it to manage student learning
    • Location: Room 33
  • SeeSaw – I would like to learn about how to use this digital learning portfolio to share learning (files, videos, photos, notes) with families
    • Location: Portable 11

Technology Support and FAQs

We have now reached a point where all students should have a device checked out to them. Please remind them to bring them everyday and remember to charge them at home each night.

Angie has 5 headsets to deliver to each teacher, please email if you need them. If you have more than 5, please return to Angie so that we can ensure that each classroom has a set.

Here is the protocol for accessing in-building technical support:

Angie Lantagne (Student Support) Call first (7034) or (3200):

  • Device-specific issues
  • Password/Skyward issues
  • Angie’s role is continuing to evolve based on what we are learning – thank you for your patience

Kelli McSheehy (Classroom Support)

  • Kelli can help with classroom-based technology as it pertains to student learning experiences
  • Pre-arrange similar to how you would schedule a class for a visit/lesson

Erin Pinning (Teacher Support)

  • Here on Tuesdays.  Email is the best way to reach her
  • She isn’t always available at a moment’s notice.
Following are some frequently asked questions (FAQ) and how we recommend handling the issue:

  • I forgot my device…
    • Student will not be able to access a loaner in this situation
    • Student may be able to look over the shoulder of a neighbor if appropriate
    • Work will need to be completed on paper (analog format)
    • If the student doesn’t bring their device repeatedly, ask them where it is and let us know if you think it may be missing
  • I don’t have headphones…
    • Each student was issued a set of earbuds to use with their Chromebook
    • Each teacher is being issued 5 sets of headphones as backups
  • A student’s device is not charged…
    • Student can plug their device into a wall plug and charge
    • If they don’t have a charging cord, suggest they borrow a neighbor’s cord
      • We are working to secure surge protectors to provide some of our classrooms with minimal plug-ins
  • I’m giving a district directed assessment and a student doesn’t have their Chromebook…
    • Contact Angie and we will check a device out to the teacher if they are available
  • What happened to all the Chromebooks and Laptop carts that we used to have?
    • The district has collected and redistributed them

Assembly Schedule (New)

In preparing for upcoming assemblies, we have created assembly schedules for each event.

Unfortunately, we are not able to do an assembly schedule that changes the elective schedule due to itinerant teachers who travel to different buildings. However, we have tried to minimize the impact by having some assemblies in the morning (Cookie Dough, Veteran’s Day, and the Holiday Assembly) and pep assemblies in the afternoon (4).

Please take a look at the schedule for each type of assembly and let us know if you have any concerns.

Tonight we will host Open House from 6:00 – 7:30.  The evening will be set up like a school day, with students visiting their teachers in order of their school day.  You will have ten minutes with each classroom to introduce yourself, talk about your classroom, expectations, curriculum, answer questions, get to know families, etc.  Here is the schedule:

  • 2nd Period: 6:25 – 6:35

On Wednesday, 9/20, we will hold our first early release.  This time will be an extension of the personalized learning plans that we brainstormed in August.  We will spend time revisiting these (recalibrating our memories 🙂 ), digging into what this work could look like, and setting the course for the remainder of our ER days.  See you Wednesday!

Tech Training: 9/27/17

On Wednesday, 9/27, we will have an opportunity for staff to select an area of need regarding technology.  In light of our 1:1 deployment, many of you are actively searching for ways to engage your leaners and manage your classroom.  This morning, I will send out a survey to see where your interests in support lie.  If you would like to take a sneak peak, you can click here.

October In-Service Day: 10/13/17

On Friday, 10/13/17, EPS will have an in-service day.  On this day, there will be several department-specific options for teachers to attend.  These trainings will occur off-site.  Be on the lookout for an email describing the expectations for this day and the offerings available.

WELCOME BACK!

To all staff:  Thank you for your hard work and dedication in making our first week back a success.  I appreciate how present and visible you were as our new students acclimated to new territory.  The smiles, handshakes, high-fives and relationship building pay huge dividends as we embark on our work as a learning organization.  Thank you for holding the rope!

Here are a few pictures capturing our journey back to school:

P.S. – If you are a new staff member who is also acclimating to the building, please feel free to ask any of us any questions to help you transition into the school year.  We are here to help!

First of all, apologies for flooded email inboxes.  My goal is to keep you updated on our device deployment and, since it is a bit of a moving target, those updates happen quite a bit.  Donna Degrenier has been working relentlessly to keep our information up to date and accurate.  We have created processing lists to email our parents, we’ve reached out via multiple live events, and we’ve connected with the kids daily at lunches last week to drive home the importance of getting our forms in.  We are getting there.  Beginning Wednesday, we will follow the deployment schedule below:

8th Grade Farewell

Now that most of our permission slips are in, I would like to talk about the schedule & details for our 8th Grade Party on Thursday, June 15th:

Schedule:

  • Core 1 – 8:00 – 9:17
  • Core 2 – 9:22 – 10:39
  • Core 3 – 10:44 – 12:00
  • Lunch – 12:05 – 12:35
  • Festivities – 12:35 – 4:10 (kids can go home at 2:42 if they want)
  • Departure – 4:10 – 4:30 students will depart the event area and board the activity bus/picked up by parents
Needs:
  • Student Supervision:  So far, we have about 50 students who are not attending.  I need two volunteers to house non-attendees in their classroom from 12:35 – 2:42.
  • Event Supervision:  For the rest of us, we will rely on your supervision during the event.  I will attach a map that shows areas where we need supervision.  We will need all of your help on this; however, you can also use this as an opportunity to interact with our 8th graders and have some fun!
    • We will flag off areas where we do not students entering/exiting — you will see this on the map.
Other Details:
  • Lunch time will be a BBQ hosted by Chartwells.  We will have access to inside the lunchroom and out in the courtyard.  We will have a system for students to purchase lunch (using their lunch code).  Let students know that they do need to purchase lunch as they would during regular lunch.  They can bring a lunch if they’d like.
  • There will be bracelets for students to wear for admission into the event, but they also help us determine who has filled out waivers to participate in Bubble Soccer.  Kim will be working to get students their bracelets during lunch time.
  • Once lunch is over and we start admitting students, we will also navigate non-attending students to the two classrooms that are volunteered.   We will connect with teachers on this ahead of time so you know who you go with.
  • If students have backpacks, we will have them check their backpacks in as they enter so they are secure and out of the way.
  • Supervision will be important.  We will work to flag off areas and keep everything contained.  Students will not be permitted to leave/re-enter.

A friendly reminder – on Wednesday, we will be holding our ILT Share-out!

  • Include your ILT Action Plan – What were you goals?

  • Outline your accomplishments

  • Provide Proposal for staff to consider (if applicable)

  • Next Steps/Recommendations to keep the work moving forward
We will be sharing in a similar fashion to the December share-out (grouped together to share/respond). If your group fancies a fancy way to present that information (a Slideshow, a Padlet, etc) feel free, just make sure that it can be accessible to your group during the share-out.
We will be meeting in the media center, aiming to start at around 3:00. If your group needs to connect briefly ahead of that time, plan on connecting between 245 – 300.

Thanks for all that you do!

Bee-ing Awesome!

Many of us had the privilege of hearing from our 6th grade scientists as they educated us on the importance of protecting our bee population.  A big shout out to our 6th grade science teachers for coordinating this effort and to our staffulty for opening up their doors (and offices) for these young scientists to show off their knowledge and share their resources!
